What this leaves out

  • Social Security disability.
  • Workers' comp.
  • Your spouse's pay.
  • Bills that change.
How we got this number

We take your monthly bills and subtract the disability pay you'd get from work. During the waiting period your savings pay the whole bill. After that, they pay the difference. Pay from a plan your employer pays for is usually taxed, so enter it after taxes. A tax pro can tell you for sure. Sources: Council for Disability Awareness, accessed 2026.
